Non-Invasive Techniques Aim to be Future of Lipoplasty (press release from ASAPS) NEW YORK, April 19 -- The world's top plastic surgeons will gather in New York to evaluate three fat treatment techniques during the Hot Topics seminar at the annual meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), April 19-24 in New York, NY. Two of these three techniques, LipoSonix's SonoSculpt and Ultrashape, are based on ultrasound technology. LipoSonix is designed to remove fat by selectively targeting fatty tissue with a high-intensity ultrasound, offering a non-invasive alternative to the more common suction-assisted lipoplasty procedure. Similar to SonoSculpt, Ultrashape aims to remove smaller amounts of fat through a non-invasive ultrasound procedure. With Ultrashape, however, the ultrasound is administered via external device. The excess fat is liquefied and then naturally absorbed and removed by the body, ideally resulting in no external bruising. The final technique, SmartLipo, is a laser-assisted lipolysis procedure involving a small incision and the insertion of a laser fiber probe. The surgeon aims the probe at fatty tissue in order to rupture the fat cells. Smaller fat cells are then absorbed by the body, while larger areas are aspirated. "As technologically innovative procedures continue to develop and reach the marketplace, patient safety continues to be our primary concern," said William P. Adams, Jr. MD, moderator of the seminar hosted bi-annually by the Innovative Procedures Committee and Emerging Trends Task Force of the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) and the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF). "The questions we need to address before advocating any new fat treatment procedure are threefold: How can the technique guarantee that too much or too little fat will not be removed? How can it guarantee that other, non-fatty tissue will remain unaffected? And, of course, what are the short and long-term side effects of the procedure?" "Presentations at the Hot Topics seminar focus on innovations which may have great potential or may have just received great marketing "hype" from the "inventor", the manufacturer, or the media" said Alan H. Gold, MD, president of the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF). "Certainly these three techniques, along with many other techniques and devices that have been recently developed, recently launched or are pending FDA approval, will be widely debated and peer reviewed on issues of safety and efficacy" he added. Neither the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) nor the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) advocates or endorses the procedures or technologies presented at the Hot Topics seminar. This seminar is strictly for the purposes of research and education in cosmetic plastic surgery. The reporting, advertising or clinical use of these procedures and technologies should be conducted cautiously, responsibly and with full disclosure of their unproven nature.
