MicroDental Identifies Top Cosmetic Dentistry Trends at This Year's AACD Show; New Products and Trends Emerge at Cosmetic Dentistry's Star-Studded Conference

DUBLIN, Calif. - May 23, 2006--MicroDental Laboratories, the world's leading cosmetic dentistry laboratory and makers of industry-leading MACVENEERS(TM), today announced the top trends from last week's American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists (AACD) 22nd Scientific Session in San Diego, May 16-20, 2006. Each year the show brings together the world's top cosmetic dentists, laboratories and manufacturers to reveal the latest products, procedures and trends in the industry. Topics generating the most buzz at this year's show are -- Consumer awareness of dental procedures, and new technologies and material advancements for creating a better, more realistic smile.

Cosmetic dentistry is more popular than ever and continues to grow. The demand for cosmetic dentistry has increased due in large part to a shift in the industry toward direct-to-consumer marketing. In the past few years, a number of top cosmetic dentists across the country have advertised in local publications and broadcast outlets. In 2005, MicroDental became the first laboratory to launch a nationwide campaign marketing their industry-leading MACVENEERS directly to consumers in publications such as InStyle and Vanity Fair.

"Beyond the usual 'Smile of your dreams' sentiments in most dental ads, consumers are interested in real information about veneers and other cosmetic dental services," said Fred Walke, CEO, MicroDental Laboratories. "In the past year, our marketing programs for MACVENEERS have been very effective in providing interested people all over the country with the kind of information they are looking for; to include the differences in materials and processes, and connecting them with well-qualified cosmetic dentists in their own local areas."

Aside from the new emphasis on marketing, other trends and developments at the show include:

Smile Trends

The days of large, over-whitened teeth are gone; now people want their smiles to look as natural as possible. Today's cosmetic dentistry techniques and products are designed for making realistic looking enhancements to accentuate a person's best features and match their overall appearance, while enhancing their natural beauty. Technological advancements that make this possible include:

-- Natural look of veneers now last longer with new resins and cements that don't fade over time: The beautiful, bright color of veneers often wore off over the years as the resin cement darkened and affected the overall color. Now, new resin cements are hitting the market that maintain their color over time, helping veneers appear brighter and whiter longer. Additionally, the newer cements block the discoloring of natural dentition under veneers caused by aging.

-- New lasers do away with scalpels. Forget going under the knife, lasers are now used to quickly and painlessly prep teeth, alter gums and take an impression, all in the same day. Lasers are becoming much more prominent in dental practices, especially for gumline modifications. Using lasers reduces time in the chair and healing time by up to three weeks.

-- Consumers can get higher quality, more natural-looking veneers faster thanks to CAD/CAM technology. Embracing CAD/CAM technology enables laboratories to better communicate with dentists, improving the look of the veneers and reducing turnaround time for restorations. Many dentists have tried using this technology within their practice to quickly design, mill and produce a restoration. However, the results are inconsistent, because most dental offices do not have trained technicians on staff to produce restorations. Laboratories that employ skilled technicians and ceramicists are adapting the technology and integrating it with their own procedures for the best of both worlds. MicroDental technicians utilize CAD/CAM computer design and milling procedures to eliminate current wax-up, pressing, reshaping, etc., in creating the initial restoration, then add the beauty and human look by hand through their cut-back techniques to layer in different colored porcelains and create a human-looking translucency and contour.

In addition to new products and technologies, many other companies are adjusting current products, such as self-etching adhesives and composites, to consolidate steps and simplify the restoration process, making cosmetic dentistry better and easier for the consumer.
