65% of women shun cosmetic surgery
64% will go out without make up and men prefer them this way
Madonna and Rachel Stevens have both been out and about this week, going
about their business and looking great without a scrap of make-up. In a
society supposedly obsessed with boob jobs and botox, cosmetic beauty and
looking like celebs at all costs, new research by Harmony reveals we're
perhaps now bolder than ever about being ourselves.
64% of women concurred with Madonna and Ms Stevens, being happy to step
out of the house without make-up and over half of the men in the survey
preferred their partner that way. Both men and women also agreed that a
great personality (32%) and a flawless, natural complexion (28%) were the
best definitions of beauty.
Although only 43% of women said they were happy with their looks, the
majority, 80%, believed in making the best of their natural attributes and
65% said they would not consider cosmetic surgery to enhance their looks.
But, far from suggesting that the way we look is no longer that important,
over 90% of the women in the survey said it certainly influenced the way
they feel about themselves and almost as many believed it influenced the
way others perceive them. Just having a bad hair day puts two thirds of
women in a bad mood!
Even at a time when celebrities dominate our lives, however, only 15% said
the high profile, rich and famous had any influence on the way they
looked, with nearly twice as many being more concerned about impressing
Whilst we may state we aren't influenced by them, we wouldn't mind looking
them! When it came to admiring beauty in the rich and famous, the women in
the survey most aspired to the elegance, style and striking good looks of
Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta Jones and Gwyneth Paltrow. Even the men
shied away from the obvious assets of Jordan in favour of the
girl-next-door sex appeal of Abi Titmuss.
On behalf of Harmony, marketing manager, Debbie Epstein said: “One of the
most interesting conclusions we can draw from this survey is that women
seem to be confident in their own bodies and are perhaps not as obsessed
with cosmetic surgery and perfect looks as the media would sometimes have
us believe. It seems more the case that whilst we continue to be
fascinated with the subject of beauty and what the celebs are doing to
look their best, both men and women appear to agree that natural and inner
beauty is actually what really counts”.
