READING, Pa., Dec. 21 "Thread lifts" promise to be among the most popular aesthetic procedures in 2006, an ideal solution for those who want to treat sagging facial skin without the downtime or scarring associated with invasive surgery.

But, not all threads, or sutures, are the same -- only one patented suture, Contour Threads(TM), has FDA-clearance for the fixation and elevation of tissue in the brow, mid-face and neck area. According to Dr. Malcolm Paul, Clinical Professor of Surgery, University of California, Irvine, prospective patients should do their homework before booking their appointment.

"As with any cosmetic procedure, the success of a thread lift depends on physician training and experience," says Dr. Paul, President of the California Society of Plastic Surgeons. "It's also important the patient understand the treatment protocol and work closely with their physician to enjoy the best possible results."

For years doctors have experimented with custom-designed sutures, or polypropylene threads, to elevate sagging facial tissue. The sutures featured barbs - tiny, hair-like bristles -- that fixated within the deep tissue, allowing physicians to reposition and elevate the skin. According to Dr. Paul, some physicians continue to use non-FDA cleared imported threads or threads created in their own offices, with varying degrees of success.

Wendy Lewis, international image consultant and author of America's Cosmetic Doctors & Dentists (Castle Connolly Medical), offers important advice for consumers who are interested in a Contour Threadlift(TM):

* Make sure the physician you select is board-certified in his/her specialty (plastic surgery, dermatology, occuplastic surgery, facial plastic surgery, etc.).

* Confirm your physician is using Contour Threads, the only barbed suture cleared by the FDA for brow, mid-face and neck/jowl area fixation and elevation. All doctors are required to attend a formal training session before they can purchase Contour Threads, so they can properly perform the Contour Threadlift procedure.

* Do the research. Understand what the procedure can and cannot do. A Contour Threadlift(TM) can lift drooping jowls and sagging eyebrows -- but it cannot add volume or remove excess skin.

* Ask the physician how many procedures he/she has performed. The more experience your doctor has, the better results you can achieve with this technology.

* Understand what to expect post-procedure and how much time you will need for recovery. Even minimally invasive techniques have some downtime.

Many physicians combine thread lifts with other procedures for a customized approach to facial rejuvenation.

"Contour Threads are great for lifting and repositioning tissues, and I often combine them with other procedures to fill in lines, add volume, remove fatty deposits, as well as traditional mid-face and neck lifts," said Dr. Paul. "Thread lifts are an ideal complement to other procedures including dermal fillers, botulinum toxin, laser resurfacing, and eyelid surgery. They give us another tool to treat specific problems that cannot be addressed effectively by other minimally-invasive techniques."
